Rating: 3 out of 5.

Night at the Medical Campus is the latest offering by Siddharth Nirwan. The book is a horror cum thriller novel with a mysterious twist towards the end. The story is set within the confines of the Raja Madho Singh Medical College, where strange occurrences have medical students, professors, and police on edge. The story goes back a few years, when a student, Sanya, mysteriously dies near a well in the campus and apparently her body was never found. Predictably, the well gains the reputation of being haunted by Sanya’s ghost. Students believe her ghost could be conjured up by anyone uttering her name thrice near the well.

A new batch of students joins the college, only to be tormented and ragged by their seniors. What starts out as fun for the seniors, turns out to be a gory path neither the seniors, nor the freshers had expected in their wildest dreams. The freshers desperate to prove their worth, visit the haunted well, uttering the name of the dead girl thrice, and all hell breaks loose. One after another students begin to disappear until one of the freshers, cooks up the courage to get to the bottom of things and stop the hauntings and strange occurrences once and for all. The climax had a bit of an unexpected twist, which I shall not reveal, for fear of committing the grave sin of transforming this review into a spoiler.

Some of the best movies and novels have an extremely simple plot, this book has a rather straightforward plot as well. However, what makes the difference is how the plot is built up, the eccentricities of its characters, how they add value to the story and are there enough cliff hangers, chills and thrills that build up anticipation to the climax. This is one of the drawbacks I found in this novel. The story goes on with characters that do not get a hold of my attention. The story moves rather slowly and is quite predictable. There is a twist at the end, as to how Sanya met her end, however, that much wasn’t enough for me. I wanted more … much more. I reviewed the Amazon Kindle Edition of the book, and there were numerous spelling and grammatical errors and omissions. These errors would possibly be corrected in the subsequent editions; however, the story unfortunately did not give me the thrill I was expecting of a horror, mystery, thriller novel.
